Titanium Dioxide MSDS Sheet, Material Safety Data Sheet

1. Product Identification

Synonyms: Titanium (IV) Oxide; C.I. 77891; Titania
CAS No.: 13463-67-7
Molecular Weight: 79.87
Chemical Formula: TiO2

2. Composition/Information on Ingredients

Ingredient: Titanium Dioxide
CAS No.: 13463-67-7
Percent: 99 - 100%
Hazardous: Yes

3. Hazards Identification

Emergency Overview
It is not classified as dangerous. Should be treated as a nuisance dust. No adverse environmental effects are known to result from the use of titanium dioxide pigments. It is insoluble and in the environment is practically inert material.

CAUTION! MAY CAUSE IRRITATION TO SKIN, EYES, AND RESPIRATORY TRACT. MAY AFFECT LUNGS.

Potential Health Effects:
Inhalation: May cause mild irritation to the respiratory tract.
Ingestion: Not expected to be a health hazard via ingestion.
Skin Contact: May cause mild irritation and redness.
Eye Contact: May cause mild irritation, possible reddening.

4. First Aid Measures

Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Get medical attention for any breathing difficulty.
Ingestion: Not expected to require first aid measures. If large amounts were swallowed, give water to drink and get medical advice.
Skin Contact: Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse. Get medical attention if irritation develops.
Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting upper and lower eyelids occasionally. Get medical attention if irritation persists.

5. Fire Fighting Measures

Fire: Not considered to be a fire hazard.
Explosion: Not considered to be an explosion hazard.
Fire Extinguishing Media: It is neither flammable nor explosive. Titanium dioxide may be exposed to water, carbon dioxide, dry chemical, and foam extinguishing agents as necessary during firefighting operations.

6. Accidental Release Measures

A spill of titanium dioxide poses hazards similar to other nuisance dusts. Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. Clean up spills immediately, using the appropriate protective equipment. Avoid generating dusty conditions, provide adequate ventilation.

7. Handling and Storage

Keep in a tightly closed container, stored in a cool, dry, ventilated area. Protect against physical damage. Containers of this material may be hazardous when empty since they retain product residues (dust, solids); observe all warnings and precautions listed for the product.

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the permissible exposure limits.
Respiratory Protection: Use NIOSH approved respirator when use is necessary. As with any nuisance dust, the use of NIOSH approved respirators is recommended in cases where prolonged exposure is expected.
Skin Protection: Wear appropriate protective gloves and clothing to prevent skin exposure.
Eye Protection: Wear appropriate protective glasses or chemical safety goggles.
Other Protective Equipment: Wear appropriate protective clothing to minimize contact with skin.
Titanium dioxide can adsorb moisture and natural oils from the surface of the skin during prolonged exposure. Prolonged exposure should be avoided by wearing suitable protective gloves and clothing.

9. Physical and Chemical Properties

Appearance: White powder.
Odor: Odorless.
Solubility: Insoluble in water.
Specific Gravity: 4.26
pH: ca. 6 - 7
% Volatiles by volume @ 21C (70F): 0
Boiling Point: 2500 - 3000C (4532 - 5432F)
Melting Point: 1855C (3371F)

10. Stability and Reactivity

Stability:  It is stable under ordinary conditions of use and storage.
Hazardous Decomposition Products: No information found.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.
Incompatibilities: A violent reaction with lithium occurs around 200C (392F) with a flash of light; the temperature can reach 900C. Violent or incandescent reaction may also occur with other metals such as aluminum, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and zinc.

11. Toxicological Information

Toxicological Data:
No LD50/LC50 information found relating to normal routes of occupational exposure. Investigated as a tumorigen and mutagen.
Carcinogenicity:
NIOSH considers this substance to be a potential occupational carcinogen.
