British Pharmacopoeia 2009

Heavy Magnesium Carbonate

Heavy Magnesium Carbonate BP

Action and use

Antacid; osmotic laxative.

DEFINITION

Hydrated basic magnesium carbonate.

Content

40.0 per cent to 45.0 per cent, calculated as MgO.

CHARACTERS

Appearance

White or almost white powder.

Solubility

Practically insoluble in water. It dissolves in dilute acids with effervescence.

IDENTIFICATION

A. Bulk density: minimum 0.25 g/ml.

B. It gives the reaction of carbonates.

C. Dissolve about 15 mg in 2 ml of dilute nitric acid and neutralize with dilute sodium hydroxide solution. The solution gives the reaction of magnesium.

TESTS Solution S

Dissolve 5.0 g in 100 ml of dilute acetic acid R. When the effervescence has ceased, boil for 2 min, allow to cool and dilute to 100 ml with dilute acetic acid. Filter, if necessary, through a previously ignited and tarred porcelain or silica filter crucible of suitable porosity to give a clear filtrate.

Appearance of solution

Solution S is not more intensely coloured than reference solution.

Soluble substances

Maximum 1.0 per cent.

Mix 2.00 g with 100 ml of water and boil for 5 min. Filter whilst hot through a sintered-glass filter, allow to cool and dilute to 100 ml with Evaporate 50 ml of the filtrate to dryness and dry at 100-105 °C. The residue weighs not more than 10 mg.

Substances insoluble in acetic acid

Maximum 0.05 per cent.

Any residue obtained during the preparation of solution S, washed, dried, and ignited at 600 ± 50°C, weighs not more than 2.5 mg.

Chlorides

Maximum 700 ppm.

Sulphates

Maximum 0.6 per cent.

Arsenic

Maximum 2 ppm, determined on 10 ml of solution S.

Calcium

Maximum 0.75 per cent.

Iron

Maximum 400 ppm.

Heavy metals

Maximum 20 ppm.

FUNCTIONALITY-RELATED CHARACTERISTICS

This section is a non-mandatory part of the monograph and it is not necessary to verify the characteristics to demonstrate compliance.

---Particle-size distribution.

---Bulk and tapped density.

Magnesium Carbonate USP

Magnesium Carbonate USP

Carbonic acid, magnesium salt, basic; or, Carbonic acid, magnesium salt (1:1), hydrate Magnesium carbonate, basic; or, Magnesium carbonate (1:1) hydrate [23389-33-5]. Anhydrous 84.31 [546-93-0].

Magnesium Carbonate is a basic hydrated MgCO3 or a normal hydrated MgCO3. It contains the equivalent of not less than 40.0 percent and not more than 43.5 percent of magnesium oxide (MgO).

Identification— When treated with 3 N hydrochloric acid, it dissolves with effervescence, and the resulting solution responds to the tests for Magnesium.

Microbial limits— It meets the requirements of the test for absence of Escherichia coli.

Soluble salts— Mix 2.0 g with 100 mL of a mixture of equal volumes of n-propyl alcohol and water. Heat the mixture to the boiling point with constant stirring, cool to room temperature, dilute with water to 100 mL, and filter. Evaporate 50 mL of the filtrate on a steam bath to dryness, and dry at 105 for 1 hour: the weight of the residue does not exceed 10 mg (1.0%).

Acid-insoluble substances— Mix 5.0 g with 75 mL of water, add hydrochloric acid in small portions, with agitation, until no more of the material dissolves, and boil for 5 minutes. If an insoluble residue remains, filter, wash well with water until the last washing is free from chloride, and ignite: the weight of the ignited residue does not exceed 2.5 mg (0.05%).

Arsenic— The limit is 4 ppm.

Limit of calcium— : the limit is 0.45%.

Heavy metals—: the limit is 0.003%.

Iron—: the limit is 0.02%.

DESCRIPTION

Magnesium Carbonate occurs as light, white, friable masses, or as a bulky, white powder. It is a basic hydrated MgCO3 or a normal hydrated MgCO3. It is stable in air. It is practically insoluble in water, to which, however, it imparts a slightly alkaline reaction. It is insoluble in alcohol, but dissolves, with effervescence, in dilute acids.

Function pH control; drying agent; color-retention agent; ant caking agent; carrier.

REQUIREMENTS

Identification When treated with 2.7 N hydrochloric acid, a sample dissolves with effervescence, and the resulting solution gives positive tests for Magnesium.

Assay The equivalent of not less than 40.0% and not more than 43.5% of MgO.

Acid-Insoluble Substances Not more than 0.05%.

Calcium Oxide Not more than 0.6%.

Lead Not more than 2 mg/kg.

Soluble Salts Not more than 1%.
