Tiemonium (often used in a form of iodide or methylsulphate salt) is a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, which is available in Asia (mainly Bangladesh) for the alleviation of muscle spasms of the intestine, biliary system, uterus and urinary bladder in gastrointestinal, biliary, urinary and gynecological diseases. Tiemonium Methylsulfate is chemically described as 4-(3-hydroxy-3-phenyl-3-(2-thienyl) propyl)-4-methyl morpholinium methylsulfate (salt). Tiemonium Methylsulfate is an antispasmodic drug. It strengthens calcium bonding with phospholipids and proteins. Tiemonium Methylsulfate is not included in any official pharmacopeia.
Specifications of Tiemonium methylsulfate or Tiemonium Methyl Sulfate:
Appearance: White or almost white crystalline powder.
Solubility: Soluble in water. Slightly soluble in ethanol and insoluble in chloroform.
Identification: UV Maximum absorbance should be between 220 to 235 nm.
Heavy metals: Not more than 20 ppm.
Loss on drying: Not more than 0.5%.
Sulphated ash: Not more than 0.2%.
Assay (on dried basis): 98% to 102.0%.
Storage: Well-closed container, protected from direct sunlight and moisture.
