Carnauba wax

Carnauba wax, also called Brazil wax or Ceara wax, or Palm wax is a vegetable wax obtained from the fronds of the carnauba tree. The wax occurs on the leaves of the palm during dry, hot weather as a natural means of protecting the leaves from the elements. While carnauba wax in its natural form is generally considered safe for human ingestion (whether orally or through the surface of the skin) due to the fact that it does not get absorbed into our system and simply tends to pass through our bodies without affecting our biological processes. In terms of cosmetics products, you’re most likely to find carnauba wax in eye-related makeup products such as eyeliners and mascaras. In terms of food products, the wax is used in a variety of different products from chewing gums to gelatin sweets, chocolates, paper coatings, fruit coatings etc. Carnauba wax is employed as a food-grade polish and as a hardening or gelling agent in a number of products. It is Generally Recognized As Safe(GRAS), according to USA FDA.

Properties and General Specifications of Carnauba Wax:
Appearance: A pale yellow to light brown, hard and brittle solid, having a clean fracture.
Melting point: 80C to 86C.
Relative density: about 0.97
Solubility: Practically insoluble in water, soluble by heating in ethyl acetate and in xylene, and practically insoluble in ethyl alcohol.

Specifications of Carnauba Wax USP NF Grade:
DEFINITION

Carnauba Wax is obtained from the leaves of Copernicia cerifera Mart. (Fam. Palmae).
Packaging and Storage: Preserve in well-closed containers.

Residue on Ignition:
Sample: 2 g
Analysis: Heat the Sample in an open porcelain or platinum dish over a flame: it volatilizes without emitting an acrid odor. Ignite.
Acceptance criteria: The weight of the residue is NMT 5 mg, corresponding to NMT 0.25%.
Melting Range or Temperature: 80C –86C
Acid Value:
Sample: 3 g
Analysis: Weigh the Sample into a 250-mL flask attached to a reflux condenser. Add 50 mL of a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and toluene (5:4), and boil gently until the wax is completely dissolved. Remove the flask from the condenser, add 1 mL of phenolphthalein and immediately titrate with 0.5 N alcoholic potassium hydroxide to a faint, reddish-yellow color. [Note— Do not allow the solution to cool. Titrate at warm temperature after refluxing.]
Calculate the acid value as the number of mg of potassium hydroxide required to neutralize the free acids in 1 g of Carnauba Wax.
Acceptance criteria: 2–7
Fats and Fixed Oils:
Sample: Use the solution from the test for Acid Value.
Analysis: To the Sample add 15.0 mL of 0.5 N alcoholic potassium hydroxide, reflux for 3 h, and titrate the excess alkali with 0.5 N hydrochloric acid to a yellow-amber color. Perform a blank determination.
Calculate the ester value. The saponification value is the sum of the ester value and the acid value.
Acceptance criteria: 78–95

Personal precautions, protective equipment, and emergency procedures: Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Ensure adequate ventilation. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc.). Restrict unprotected personnel from the area. Prevent any contact with hot surfaces. Do not approach facing the wind. Do not touch the spilled material.
Environmental precautions: Do not let the product enter drains, soil, or water sources.
Methods and materials used for containment Cleanup procedures and Storage: Contain spilled material. Cover with an inert, non-combustible absorbent material, (e.g. sand, earth, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite). Vacuum or sweep-up and remove to an approved disposal container.

7. Handling and Storage

Precautions for safe handling: Apply according to good manufacturing and industrial hygiene practices. Ensure proper ventilation. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not drink, eat, or smoke while handling. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Minimize dust generation. Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc.). Prevent any contact with hot surfaces.
Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities: Store in cool, dry, and ventilated area away from heat sources and protected from sunlight in tightly closed original container. Keep air contact to a minimum. Do not leave the material container open. Store protected from heat, sparks and ignition sources and incompatible materials. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of dust/mist/vapor. Do not store with incompatible materials like oxidizing materials.

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Airborne Exposure Limits: This product does not contain any hazardous materials with occupational exposure limits established by the region-specific regulatory bodies.
Ventilation System: A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area.
Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved): For conditions of use where exposure to dust or mist is apparent and engineering controls are not feasible, a particulate respirator may be worn. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-face positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator.
Skin Protection: Wear protective gloves and clean body-covering clothing.
Eye Protection: Use chemical safety goggles and/or full face shield where dusting or splashing of solutions is possible. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.
Other Control Measures: Maintain good housekeeping in work area. Dust deposits on floors and other surfaces may pick up moisture and cause the surfaces to become slippery and present safety hazards. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Wash hands after handling.
