Nitric Acid

Nitric acid (HNO3) is a highly corrosive mineral acid. The pure compound is colorless, but older samples tend to acquire a yellow cast due to decomposition into oxides of nitrogen and water. Most commercially available nitric acid has a concentration of 68% in water. When the solution contains more than 86% HNO3, it is referred to as fuming nitric acid. Depending on the amount of nitrogen dioxide present, fuming nitric acid is further characterized as white fuming nitric acid at concentrations above 95%, or red fuming nitric acid at concentrations above 86%. Commercially available nitric acid is an azeotrope with water at a concentration of 68% HNO3. This solution has a boiling temperature of 120.5C at 1 atm. It is known as "concentrated nitric acid". Nitric acid is subject to thermal or light decomposition and for this reason it was often stored in brown glass bottles. White fuming nitric acid, pure nitric acid or WFNA, is very close to anhydrous nitric acid. It is available as 99.9% nitric acid by assay. One specification for white fuming nitric acid is that it has a maximum of 2% water and a maximum of 0.5% dissolved NO2.

We offer all grades of Nitric Acid including 0.1 N or 1N (Normal), 0.1 N or 1N (Normal) or 0.1 & 1M (Molar) etc Analytical Reagent (Normal) or 0.1 & 1M (Molar) etc Analytical Reagent Grade products.

Sulfates: Maximum 10 ppm.
Iron: Maximum 10 ppm.
Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.01 per cent.

ASSAY
To 0.750 g add 50 mL of water and titrate with 1 M sodium hydroxide, determining the end-point potentiometrically.
1 mL of 1 M sodium hydroxide is equivalent to 63.0 mg of HNO3.

STORAGE
Protected from light.

Nitric Acid USP NF Grade:
HNO3 --- 63.01 --- [CAS 7697-37-2].

Nitric Acid contains not less than 69.0 percent and not more than 71.0 percent, by weight, of HNO3.

Caution: Avoid contact, because Nitric Acid rapidly destroys tissues.

Packaging and storage: Preserve in tight containers.
Clarity and color: Mix it in its original container, and transfer 10 mL to a 20- × 150-mm test tube. Compare with water in a similar test tube: the liquids are equally clear and free from suspended matter, and, when viewed transversely by transmitted light, exhibit no apparent difference in color.
Identification: It responds to the tests for Nitrate.
Residue on ignition: To 70 mL (100 g) in a tared crucible add 2 drops of sulfuric acid, and evaporate to dryness. Ignite for 15 minutes: the weight of the residue does not exceed 0.5 mg (5 ppm).
Chloride: A 35-mL (50-g) portion shows no more chloride than corresponds to 35 6L of 0.020 N hydrochloric acid (0.5 ppm).
Sulfate: Add about 10 mg of sodium carbonate to 28 mL of Nitric Acid. Evaporate to dryness, dissolve in a mixture of 4 mL of water and 1 mL of dilute hydrochloric acid (1 in 20), and filter if necessary. Wash with two 2-mL portions of water, dilute with water to 10 mL, and add 1 mL of barium chloride. Observe 10 minutes after adding the barium chloride: any turbidity produced is not greater than that produced by 40 microL of 0.020 N sulfuric acid in an equal volume of solution containing the quantities of reagents used in the test (1 ppm).
Iron: Evaporate 35 mL (50 g) to dryness, dissolve the residue in 2 mL of hydrochloric acid, and dilute with water to 47 mL: the limit is 0.2 ppm.
Heavy metals: To 70 mL (100 g) in a 250-mL beaker add about 10 mg of sodium carbonate, and evaporate on a steam bath to dryness. Add 25 mL of water: the limit is 0.2 ppm.
Assay: Weigh accurately about 2 mL of Nitric Acid in a tared, glass-stoppered conical flask, and add 25 mL of water. Add methyl red, and titrate with 1 N sodium hydroxide. Each mL of 1 N sodium hydroxide is equivalent to 63.01 mg of HNO3.

The product is not combustible, but it is an oxidizer.
Extinguishing Medium
: CO 2, dry chemical, dry sand, alcohol-resistant foam, water spray. Avoid a heavy water stream.
Hazardous Combustion Products: Nitrogen oxides (NOx) Thermal decomposition can lead to release of irritating gases and vapors. Thermal decomposition can lead to release of irritating gases and vapors. The product causes burn of eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. Oxidizer: Contact with combustible/organic material may cause fire. May ignite combustibles (wood paper, oil, clothing, etc.).
Special Information: In the event of a fire, wear full protective clothing and NIOSH-approved self-contained breathing apparatus with full face piece operated in the pressure demand or other positive pressure mode. At high temperatures under fire conditions, it may produce toxic or irritating fumes. Fire-extinguishing work is done from the windward and the suitable fire-extinguishing method according to the surrounding situation is used. Uninvolved persons should evacuate to a safe place. Contact with combustible material may cause fire.

Section 6. Spills and Disposals

Personal precautions, protective equipment, and emergency procedures: Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc.). Restrict unprotected personnel from the area. Prevent any contact with hot surfaces. Do not approach facing the wind. Do not touch the spilled material.
Environmental precautions: Do not let the product enter drains, soil, or water sources.
Methods and materials used for containment Cleanup procedures and Storage: Do not inhale dust, vapors, mist, or gas. Avoid dust formation. Contain spilled material. Cover with an inert, non-combustible absorbent material, (e.g. sand, earth, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite). Use a shovel to put the material into a convenient waste disposal container. Finish cleaning by spreading water on the contaminated surface and allow to evacuate as per law.

Section 7. Handling and Storage

Toxic hazardous material. Use only under a chemical fume hood. Wear personal protective equipment. Combustible materials, strong reducing agents, heavy metals, alkalis, and organic matter may produce self-accelerated thermal decomposition.
Precautions for safe handling: Apply according to good manufacturing and industrial hygiene practices. Ensure proper ventilation. In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not drink, eat, or smoke while handling. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Minimize dust generation. Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc.). Prevent any contact with hot surfaces.
Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities: Store in cool, dry, and ventilated area away from heat sources and protected from sunlight in tightly closed original container. Keep air contact to a minimum. Store protected from heat, sparks and ignition sources and incompatible materials. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of dust/mist/vapor. Do not store with incompatible materials like strong oxidizing agents, organic materials, powdered metals, strong reducing agents. concentrated solution reacts exothermically with water (moisture).

Section 8. Exposure Controls & Personal Protection

Exposure Limits: ACGIH TLV: TWA: 2 ppm, OSHA PEL: TWA: (2 ppm Vacated)
Engineering Controls: Use adequate exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the allowable exposure limit.
Ventilation System: A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area.
Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved): For conditions of use where exposure to dust or mist is apparent and engineering controls are not feasible, a particulate respirator may be worn. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-face positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator.
Skin Protection: Wear protective gloves and clean body-covering clothing.
Eye Protection: Use chemical safety goggles and/or full face shield where dusting or splashing of solutions is possible. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.
Other Control Measures: Maintain good housekeeping in work area. Dust deposits on floors and other surfaces may pick up moisture and cause the surfaces to become slippery and present safety hazards. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Wash hands after handling.
