Tartrazine is a synthetic lemon-yellow azo dye primarily used as a food coloring. It is also known as E number E102. Many foods contain tartrazine in varying proportions, depending on the manufacturer or person preparing the food. Various types of medications include tartrazine to give a yellow, orange or green hue to a liquid, capsule, pill, lotion, or gel, primarily for easy identification. Tartrazine is also used in some cosmetics and personal care products such as liquid soaps, lotions, hand sanitizer, perfumes, nail polish, and shampoos.

DESCRIPTION
FD&C Yellow No. 5 is principally the trisodium salt of 4,5-dihydro-5-oxo-1-(4-sulfophenyl)-4-[4-sulfophenyl-azo]-1Hpyrazole-3-carboxylic acid.
Function: Color.
Identification: The visible absorption spectrum of a sample of FD&C Yellow No. 5 dissolved in 0.04 N aqueous ammonium acetate has a wavelength maximum of 428 nm, with an absorptivity of 0.053 L/(mg·cm).
